Don’t Fear the Garden

The launch of Grow Narberth this past weekend has all of us on the CGN team thinking about our own gardening journeys. By starting a community garden network in Narberth, we want to teach others about gardening, to help the environment, and to donate food to our neighbors. We know from our own experience that gardening is fun and gratifying. But at the same time, we know that gardening can be intimidating. It’s hard to figure out what to plant, where to plant it, and how to maintain a garden, especially if you’ve never grown anything before. At some point, all of us have buried those first few seeds. We’ve over-watered and under-watered. We’ve had years where nothing sprouts and years where squirrels have dug up every other seed. But despite these failures, we kept going. And we kept growing. As frightening as it may seem to start your own garden, it’s worth it. Gardening should be a relaxing and rewarding experience; one where you can put work in and get some delicious produce out of it.

That’s why Grow Narberth is here. We want to help you start your garden- and learn to love it. We want to take the fear out of the process so that you can plant in peace. We want gardening to be about community, and that’s why we’re building ours: to help gardeners all over Narberth connect and support each other. So, remember that it doesn’t matter who you are. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been growing food your entire life, or if you’ve never planted a seed before. We want to help gardeners- all gardeners- recognize their potential. If you’ve always wanted to grow something but never got started, we’re here for you. If you don’t have the resources or the knowledge to plant food but want to learn, we’re here for you. If you’ve been gardening your entire life and want to share what you know with others, we’re here for you. It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you come from, or how good of a gardener you are right now. There’s always space for you in our garden.
